how to motivate yourself

When you first think of achieving a goal - you are so gung-ho! You start strong.

But then something happens...

Slowly, your energy fades. You procrastinate. Things slip away.

Have you wondered why it's so easy to do the things that are not great for you?

Eating fries? Easy.

Scrolling TikTok? No sweat.

But goals that are good for us, like going to the gym or eating healthy - that's hard.

It gets even harder when you need to stay motivated for career goals.

The reason is that for bigger, long-term goals, you don't receive any short-term rewards. Eating fries gives you a shot of dopamine—a reward. It's a feel-good hormone!

Update that resume? Learning to negotiate? No short term reward!

It is easy to give up.

Intellectually, you know that giving up is not good for you, but how do you find the motivation to keep going?

What if I told you there is a way to keep that motivation alive!

Here are the two steps:

First, you must know your 'why'. Want to live in luxury? Increased reputation? Ability to impact change? Take care of family?

Take the time to find that why - that's your fuel.

No wrong answer here.

Second, break down the big goal into small goals.

Let's say, you want an extra $500,000 a year.

Break it down into a list:

Need to set up a job search process.

Get a coach.

Network.

Update your resume.

Tackle each part.

And every time you tackle one, give yourself a reward - something meaningful. Celebrate each win. Feel proud.

This way, you "trick" your brain to providing you with the dopamine you need.

This allows you to keep moving towards your big goal.

Try this and you will be in the driver's seat to new opportunities!

Hi Reader, Most executive candidates focus on preparing the perfect answers. But after decades of sitting on both sides of the interview table, I discovered something surprising: it’s not your answers that land the top offers—it’s your ability to spot the “golden nuggets” hiding in plain sight. What are golden nuggets? They’re the subtle cues, unspoken priorities, and hidden challenges that reveal what an organization really needs. When you learn to spot them, you can position yourself as the...

You’re working very hard…sending resumes, applications, updating LinkedIn, refreshing resumes... But it’s not enough. It’s never enough. The result? Stalemate. A string of "no thank-you-s" or worst, ghosting. Working hard is not yielding any results. Why? Because, for some of us, the system is rigged. Once you acknowledge this truth, you can stop working harder towards an unattainable result and you can engineer the system to work in your favor. How? This is the story of a recent client: She...
